10 Jul Boca Chica is Boca Chica
Boca Chica Beach will not be renamed Cyber Beach . Most did not even know the name was under threat.
Yesterday a federal panel called the Domestic Names Committee of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names held a hearing on the proposal and officially rejected it.
Proposed by a self-professed SpaceX fan and Cybertrick owner from Missippippi, the petition was submitted to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, part of the Department of Interior and finally made it to a hearing yesterday. Shockingly, local leaders (including our federal representatives) were not made aware that the federal government was discussing the change.
U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Brownsville wrote he and the public were “blindsided by the proposal” and that this made it difficult for him and other community leaders to respond. In a letter sent to the committee Thursday prior to the hearing, he stated “I am disappointed to see a federal entity not notify federal representatives of activity happening in their district.”
Either way, we fought back hard–the committee reported receiving approximately 2,780 emails opposing the name change. County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr., expressed he was wary of the name change process and how individuals can submit name petitions to the federal government regarding areas they don’t live near.
We expect more details to become available once we get the full minute of the meeting later next month.
